18th Century Welsh Coffer
Circa early 1700's.
Size 146cm long x 59cm wide x 75cm high.
A stunning early example of an oak Welsh coffer. A coffer is a chest that served a a seat, table, trunk or for the storage of valuables and is one of the earliest forms of European furniture. Unsettled conditions made it imperative that furniture and contents be readily transported together.
Ideal for a blanket box, or that bit of extra storage
This oak coffer is in great shape for its age, with a few period repairs. It has been made with no nails, all joins are plugged for strength, common practice 300 odd years ago. The chest is very strong and will withstand another 300 years, though having no nails. it does creek and flex a little when moving.
