Barriball House Roof Vent
Circa 1890's
Size 1.42m tall x 68cm square.
Here we have one of the most exquisite garden antiques on the market today in New Zealand we believe. It would be hard to find another one like this anywhere!
This circa 1890’s roof ventilator is from Barriball house which was situated on Kitchener road in Waiuku. The Barriball’s quickly made a name (and money) for themselves upon arriving in New Zealand.
Charles, Ann with their three young children, John, Samuel and Sophia departed from Plymouth on 'The Duke of Westminster' on December 4th, 1842. They landed in Auckland on April 1st, 1843 after a passage of 128 days.
On May 30th, 1856, Charles took up land at Waiuku by Crown Grant, becoming the owner of 145 acres, 1 rood and 20 perches. He named the property Eden Hill. Eight months later, he took up a further grant of 442 acreas of land in the Parish of Waiuku East. This area was originally called Waitangi and was later renamed Pukeoware.
Sadly, the building no longer exists nor have any photo’s every surfaced but local historians all agree Barriball House was one of the finest in Franklin.
